About Browning firearms

John Moses Browning lived from 1855 to 1926. As a designer, he had a decisive impact on the development of weapons in the nineteenth, twentieth and even twenty-first centuries. The most modern pistols are still made today, on the basis of his patents in the nineteenth century. His father, Jonathan Browning already had his own workplace making weapons in Kentucky. In 1846, the family moved to Nauvoo in Illinois. Brownings father opened another shop selling arms there. Six years later, he moved again, to Ogden in the state of Utah, where he started another arms company. John Moses was born in 1855. He was bought up in trade, and made his first gun at the age of 14. Together with his brother Mathew, John Moses took over the business. In 1880, the business was renamed the J.M. Browning& Brother Company. In the same year they started production of a series of the Browning Model 1878 single-shot rifle. Up to 1882, they made several hundred of these. The activities of the new company attracted the attention of competitors. In 1883, the stocks of M1878 rifles and the production rights were bought up by the Winchester Repeating Arms Company. After this, Browning never produced any more weapons itself. John Moses designed more than 80 weapon systems and had 128 patents for weapons to his name. He sold many designs to Colt, Remington, Stevens and Winchester. Examples include the Colt 1900 and the famous Colt 1911 pistols, the Winchester 1885 rifle, and the later lever-action rifles. In 1897, he designed a small model pistol with a recoil locking system in 7.65mm (.32 ACP) caliber. He tried to sell this design to Colt, but Colt wasnt interested. The Belgian company FN (The Fabrique Nationale in Herstal) liked the design of this pistol and bought the production rights. The FN was founded in 1889 by a group of Belgian industries. The Fabrique Natinale bought up the American Browning Company in 1977. At the time, Browning was actually only a trading company. FN manufactured the pistols and the Browning shotguns were made by Miroku in Japan. The Belgian Herstal SA group consist of the subsidiaries Browning USA, (including Winchester and Browning Canada), Browning Europe, including the Japanese Miroku.
